Investigation of the Wood Chromite Mine Area
by Frank K. McIntosh and McHenry Mosier
Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 4383, December 1948
(extracts)
Summary
The Wood mine area was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in 1941 by a magnetic survey and a gravitational survey. Surface trenches were excavated, and diamond-drill holes were bored at the strongest anomalies developed in common by the two surveys.
History and Production
... continued prospecting [on Maryland and Pennsylvania serpentine areas] uncovered several other ore bodies of chromite, the most important being the Wood mine. This at one time was the largest source of chromium in the world and was worked from 1827 to 1882, the last year being devoted to an unsuccessful attempt to discover an extension of the deposit.
Property and Ownership
The area investigated is on the Wood Farm and the Yinger farm. The surface rights of the Wood farm, comprising 210.5 acres, are owned by Robert K. Wood of Nottingham, PA. The mineral rights, owned by the Octararo Water Co. of Philadelphia, PA, were under lease to Guernsey Stevenson of Philadelphia.
The Yinger farm is owned by the Yinger brothers, who live on the property.
