Wet Pit
Location: Rock Springs; there is a lot of confusion between the Red Pit, Jenkins, and Wet Pit mines. Wet Pit is taken as the northmost of the 3 mines, closest to Rock Springs Church. The mine consists of 3 small water-filled shafts in a line trending N. 23° W. The northmost shaft appears to have been the main one. In 1955 it was open and timbers were visible for at least 20 feet. Two piles of low-grade disseminated ore remain northeast and southeast of this shaft. The large dump from the 3 shafts consists much sparsely disseminated chromite in schlieren bands and irregular lenses in serpentine and probably represents most of what was mined in a prospecting venture that failed, partly because of the lack of milling facilities. The mine seems to have been included in the WWI plans of F. L. Garrison, who hoped to concentrate and sell the lean ore discarded in early days (Pearre & Heyl). |
