Riley Quarry

Location: 0.4 miles southeast of Rock Springs.

Two hundred yards south of the McVey quarry is a quarry on the old Kennard Riley place now owned by Milford Richardson. The opening is  about 50 feet by 30 feet and filled with water.  It was workedover 20 years ago by Riley and later to a small extent by Thomas Weaver. The dike is no longer exposed but considerable orthoclase on the dump is an unusual feature  for the soda feldspar deposits. A little talc was taken from this operation about 14 years ago for Bald Friar mill. (Maryland Geological Survey, 1928)

This quarry was worked until about 1899 and again about 1913, when a little talc was also produced. Singewald gives the dimensions of the quarry as 150 feet by 30 feet; depth unknown (Pearre and Heyl, 1960).
