Lewis Tracts

1) In 1803 John Lewis purchased a tract of 10 acres 63 perches on the west side of Valley Forge Road. In 1807 he sold this tract to Anthony Freeman who died in 1832. His friend, Abel Lewis, was executor of Freeman's will and sold the tract to Freeman's daughters. In turn they sold it to Hector Mullen in 1842.

In the 20th century the tract became the home for the Morris Refuge Association for Homeless and Suffering Animals and then the Ryerss Infirmary for Dumb Animals.

2) In 1829 Abel Lewis purchased a tract of 2 acres from Joshua Evans. The deed was never recorded but is quoted in subsequent deeds. Joshua Evans purchased a number of tracts of land in the locality and it is unclear which one included this 2 acres.

The tract was passed between members of the Lewis family until it was acquired by Jonathan T. Lewis in 1855. In the next year Jonathan sold part of the tract to the trustees of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
