Finding Aid for the Sally Nelson Kuhns Collection, 2022

Sally Nelson graduated from Conestoga High School in 1970. She played first trumpet in the school band, and went on to became a professional trumpet player. She credited her love of music to her teacher at Conestoga, Anton Kiehner. Under her married name of Sally Kuhns, she retired from the Oregon Symphony after performing with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and ensembles at Aspen, Colorado; Tanglewood, New York; and Spoleto, South Carolina. The Conestoga Band had a gray uniform for many years, and Sally Nelson Kuhns donated her gray uniform, along with the material described below.

Clippings: article on T-E Junior High end-of-year ceremony, 1966, in which Miss Caroline Nutt and Mrs. Dorothy Waltz retired, and various awards were given to students that year. Other items include: articles on band concerts; the new uniform design; and a 1968 article from The Wayne Suburban describing the Conestoga H. S. band’s aborted appearance at the Cherry Blossom Parade in Washington D.C. when violent rioting after the death of Martin Luther King forced them to flee. There is also a one-page biographical summary for Sally Kuhns from an unknown source. All of the above items are filed with Conestoga High clippings.
