VALLEY FORGE HOTEL
Mr. Lewis said he believed there was no
objection in the neighborhood to this application. -
The house had been established for 40 years - it
was the old Workizer house. Mr. Haughey, the
applicant, was an exemplary man.
Court - It was at this house there was some
riot, which came before the Court, if I remember -
what was it?
Lewis - It grew out of a long scrape, for which
Mr. Haughey was in no wise responsible. Liquor
had been brought but not at this house. Mr.
H. [Haughey] had been troubled very much by an unscrupulous
set of fellows, unlicensed venders (sic) [vendors] and others,
who did much harm in the neighborhood -
disorderly men who were opposed to a well regulated
house such as Haughey kept.
Court - Was he concerned in that row>
Lewis - It was his brother who was concerned
on it He did not strike according to this witnesses -
although it was so alleged by the Constable -
he came up to part the combatents (sic) [combatants]
Court - It was the Englishman who out
the hog. It was on Sunday.
Lewis - Yes - the bar was shut up, and the
riot was not caused by the hotel.
Court - The fight took place near the hotel ?
Lewis - The last round took place near by ; but
it began at some distance off. The best men of
the neighborhood all ask that the license may be
granted. I trust your honors will not be influenced
by any thing which may have been said to
your honors out of Court on this case, which I
would infer from the remarks of the Court.
Court - Something had been said here.
Lewis - Then it should have been said publicly,
we are prepared to meet anything that has been
or may be said, and to out it down at once.
License granted.
