A farm that straddled Bear Hill Road was acquired by the Baugh family around 1769 (see 1847 map below). A tannery run by Daniel Baugh was located near to the Baugh homestead on the west side of Bear Hill Road. It is first recorded in the 1797 tax returns. The tannery was operated by the family until around 1860, the business not surviving Daniel Baugh’s death in 1858.
