Generals McDougal and Conway and Colonel Forman were quartered in huts on the north side of route 23 between the gate house and memorial chapel. Perhaps General Paterson’s quarters were also located in the area?

Note the island in the Schuylkill. Fatlands Ford ran from the south side of the river to the western tip of the island, down the island and then across to the north bank. The channel between the island and the northern back is now silted in. This ford was one of the major crossing places for the British Army in September 1777 on its way to occupying Philadelphia.
